National Parks in Minnesota

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that there are six National Park sites in Minnesota.  Voyageurs, on the Canadian border near International Falls, was the only site I knew about until recently.  Our National Park service is celebrating its 100th birthday this year and is working to spread the word about the wide variety of spectacular resources that are being preserved and protected by the park system.  The sites in Minnesota are:

    • Voyageurs National Park   218,000 acres along the Canadian border.  The gateways include Crane Lake and International Falls
    • North Country National Trail  800 miles in Minnesota
    • St. Croix National Waterway
    • Pipestone National Monument
    • Mississippi National Scenic River  The headquarters is at the Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul
    • Grand Portage National Monument

There is great information online about these jewels at http://www.nps.gov/state/mn/index.htm
