Outdoor Fun in Minnesota is Underway!Published by hmn_admin on Wed, 2015-12-30 10:14
Although we had some snow in Southern Minnesota and the South Metro on Monday and Tuesday, the downhill ski areas have been making snow and report good conditions and more trails open this week. A current condition report compiled by the Minnesota Ski Areas Association is online at http://www.skiandboardmn.com/snow-report
Cross country skiing is still limited to just a few spots. Most DNR reports are either “trails closed” or “poor skiing.” The exceptions are Jay Cooke State Park new Carlton which rates the cross country skiing as “good.” The full DNR report is online at:
http://dnr.state.mn.us/snow_depth/index.html and Koochiching State Forest at International Falls which rates there conditions as “very good”.
Ice fishing is just getting underway at Lake Mille Lacs. There are ice and fishing reports updated frequently on their website at www.millelacs.com. As of December 30th, there is some fishing in bays but no ice houses out yet. Access is on foot or by ATV so far. Ask local resorts and bait shops for current information and use caution.
Fishing on Lake of the Woods at Baudette kicked off on Monday, December 28th with “day houses.” The resorts hope to have the heavier sleeper houses out soon. There are frequent ice reports online at www.sportsmanslodges.com or at http://lakeofthewoodsmn.com/lake-of-the-woods-fishing-report/. Check with local resorts or bait shops for current conditions. Use caution and enjoy!
